Challenge 3 - Oceania!

Located in the deep blue Pacific Ocean, Oceania is a continent of a thousand islands and it’s the next excursion on our tour around the world.

CHALLENGE 3 – OCEANIA
​
...The art of storytelling!
​
Oceania is a continent containing many low-lying islands which has been populated by countless different ETHNIC groups for many millennia.
Besides English and French, there are nearly 900 other languages in the continent to tell its traditional STORIES AND LEGENDS which have been passed down through the generations. OCEANIAN ART encompasses both material and spiritual aesthetics of the native peoples of the Pacific, (rock paintings, totems…) as well as numerous meaningful SYMBOLS, such as body painting and tattoos, which can often denote the social standing or even the magic powers of the person who wears them. The land itself is often seen as being sacred: the environment and all its variations imposes its COLOURS on the people that live in it, and influences the way they live their lives by the RESOURCES it provides them.
Whatever form your project takes, it should tell a story, be inspired from the images below, and should include at least one of the following elements;

Patterns inspired by traditional symbols (Maori tattoos, Dots/dashes of aboriginal Arts…)

Think Monochromatic black and white or think colors of the Earth.

Some sort of organic or natural material(s) (earth, stone, bone, bark, wood, fibres…)

Shapes inspired by traditional or indigenous art

Go CRAZY and treat yourself to some fun: you don't have to include all the suggested elements in the instructions, but why not have some fun seeing how many you can fit in. The more the merrier!

Our jury will also be taking into account - your designs, techniques, how you have expressed the themes... They will be looking for originality and will keeping an eye out for any individual outstanding creations for special awards.
​

Aida Domisiewicz - Canvas
I created a big mixed media canvas inspired by Aboriginal art – the colors, shapes, natural elements and hands prints. I did not plan the final look, I just chose the colors of paints and started to create. I played with paints, stamps, layers and details. You can just start creating and then stop at any point. I got carried away with the creative process, but you can actually make less layers and it will also look interesting. So my story which I am telling on this canvas, is that I am being close to the nature and traditions. On my video I have also used Aboriginal music, mostly played with didgeridoo, very old, traditional Aborigine instrument. It’s amazing, deep and true and you can really be inspired by this music itself.

Louise Nelson - Canvas Painting
For my project I have painted a canvas of three sisters – the story tellers, and created a little descriptive story about who they are, to go with it. The painting and the story are not based on truth or any actual Aboriginal ‘Dreamtime’ stories, however they were the source of inspiration. With the title ‘The Art of Story Telling’, and taking inspiration from the Countries, Cultures and Art forms from the countries making up Australasia It felt right to use my own home country Australian Indigenous Aboriginal Art Expressions and Dreamtime stories as a source of inspiration.
Paul Browning - Art Journal
An art journal page inspired by the decorative body tattoos adorning Maori Warriors.
Tina Walker - Ancient Peoples Assemblage Piece
Story telling is such a powerful medium, especially when it is done visually, instead of the spoken word. The aboriginal peoples of Australasia have a long, deep history that is organic and raw. I was inspired by the following challenge ideas: cultural symbols (dots), colors of the earth, & organic elements (wood and acorn tops).
Tracy Evans - Assemblage
I loved taking part in the third challenge, it really challenged me to think outside the box. I was first struck by all the markings in aboriginal art and that was my starting point. I also loved the natural elements and colour tones too. I wanted to create a piece that was organic with lots of natural elements too
If you are taking part you will need to;

Create a piece of artwork following the theme and instructions for the challenge.

Post your work on the AALL & Create Fanatics Facebook group in the Challenge 3 Oceania album. Please note that only work posted in the correct albums will be eligible for inclusion.

Anyone who does not have a Facebook account but who still wants to take part can do so by posting their work on their own blog or website and emailing the link to contact@aallandcreate.com or just by mailing us the image of the work.
